Leadership Academy

In partnership with County Durham Sport the SSP run an annual Leadership Academy for young people across Durham City and Chester-le-Street aged 14+.

The programme offers young people the chance to gain valuable experience in leadership and volunteering along with gaining new training and qualifications. On an annual basis we have around 75 young people enrolled in the programme. The young people gain experience both within their own school and the local community as well as assisting at SSP competitions and festivals.

Our secondary schools and colleges are asked to encourage any potential sports leaders to apply for to be part of the programme.

Over 90 young people have been selected for this years academy of which 56 attended the launch day on 23rd October at Freeman's Quay. Here they took part in a variety of workshops to motivate and inspire them as they begin their leadership journey. They had the opportunity to meet other young people from different schools with a variety of backgrounds who all share a common desire of wanting to be a great sports leader. Have a look at the photos from the launch day to see what the students got up to.

The Leadership Academy students will receive support from their school, the SSP and County Durham Sport to provide voluntary opportunities whether in school, at a community club or SSP event. They will also be able to gain general and sport specific qualifications.

At the end of the year for those Leadership Academy Students who have achieved 50 hours volunteering or more, they will be invited to attend a Leadership Celebration Event which celebrates the achievements of young people across County Durham.

Leadership Champions

Successful Leadership Academy students will be invited to apply for the County Durham Leadership Champions. Ran by County Durham Sport as the next stage in the leadership pathway, applicants can apply to focus on coaching, officiating or media related role.

At present there are 8 students from Durham & Chester-le-Street on the Leadership Champions programme. The induction took place on 12th November where they got to meet the champions from other areas and create an action plan for their leadership & volunteering.
